Job Description:

Frost Valley YMCA is located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains in New York State. Each Year we serve over 20,000 people, primarily from the greater NYC, Long Island, and northern New Jersey region, through our Environmental Education and Groups and Family Retreats Departments. We provide exciting outdoor learning opportunities to very diverse audiences, many of whom might not otherwise have the opportunity to access these experiences!

 

Outdoor Program Instructors are responsible for the preparation and delivery of programs offered through the Environmental Education, Team building, and Group and Family Retreats programs which include but are not limited to hikes, ecology lessons, team building, adventure and recreation education, and facilitating high and low rope elements. Each program staff member must be able to effectively communicate and interact with students and guests of all ages. Persons of color are encouraged to apply.

 

A hands-on, field position that directly involves teaching and leading groups of students in outdoor, environmental, recreational and challenge course activities. Instructors should expect long yet extremely rewarding days that may include weekends and/or evenings for night hikes and special programs. Instructors will have two days off for every five days worked. Instructors will work with schools and groups throughout the spring season, with the possibility of extending work through the summer (Summer Camp) and fall (Outdoor Education).

Essential Functions: Plan and teach classes to groups of children, young people and adults; supervise outdoor recreation activities for schools and youth groups visiting camp; maintain specialized outdoor equipment; assist with cleaning and preparation of camp facilities; assist with special programs; assist with curriculum development and planning. Potential to act in rotation as one of a team of "on duty" hosts when groups are present at camp.

Requirements: Must be hard working, flexible, and have a willingness to learn new skills. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; speak in front of a group; capable of supervising children; be able to work with a diverse population of youth and adults. Must have attention to detail and be capable of working independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications: Degree or major in Education, Recreation, or relevant experience; passionate for working outdoors with youth, teens, and adults; comfortable outdoors and familiar with outdoor recreation and natural sciences. Lifeguarding a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience in Outdoor Education, facilitation, high and low challenge courses or related experiences.

 

 

Salary:
14.20/hour, includes private room housing and meals while working
Benefits:

$14.20 hourly, housing accommodations and meals provided.

Medical/dental/life insurance effective the 1st of the month, after 60 days of service for full time positions.

Eligible for YMCA retirement

Shared and individual housing on-site with a private room.
