The Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute (NRI) seeks applications for an Outdoor Recreation Research Technician position at Fort Stewart, Hinesville, Georgia. The Research Technician supports the installation with hunting, fishing, forest timber products, flora/fauna management, public outreach, and other programs outlined in the Fort Stewart Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP).

 

Position is funded for 12 months with possibility of extension contingent on project conditions, project

need, and available funding.

 

Fort Stewart encompasses 280,000 acres and is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River. It’s approximately 41 miles southwest of the city of Savannah. The installation supports world-class training, and military armored power projection combination for the eastern United States. Fort Stewart is responsible for organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling garrison support and service activities.

 

Background: Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute (TAMU-NRI) was established in 1978 and operates as a unit of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. TAMU-NRI’s work focuses on the conservation and management of natural resources through interdisciplinary and applied research, technology transfer, policy and economic analyses, and stakeholder engagement. TAMU-NRI team members have extensive natural resources and research experience within academia, private industry, and other state and federal agencies. Many of TAMU-NRI staff are former veterans and/or have extensive program/project experience with DoD and work on military installations (http://nri.tamu.edu/people/). Currently, TAMU-NRI manages a DoD project portfolio of $10M+ annually.

 

Duties include: Research Technician, under general supervision will have broad knowledge that combines an understanding of outdoor recreation, natural resource conservation, sociology, land management, community or regional planning, forestry, biology and other scientific fields. This person is able to analyze, survey, plan, evaluate, report, educate and collaborate effectively with a variety of people. Ability to work cooperatively with wildlife professionals, state and federal personnel, and faculty of Texas A&M University, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Service.

Qualifications:

Must be physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations for long periods of time under varying weather conditions. Field activities will require frequent walking, pulling, lifting, and using motorized equipment and tools.

Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles, including cars, trucks, boats, and ATVs.

Experience using gas-powered and mechanical tools, to include auger, chainsaws, mowers, tractor, etc.

A positive attitude in adverse environmental conditions such as fire ants, chiggers, rattlesnakes, feral pigs, poison ivy, daily temperatures of over 90°F or below 40°F, thorny brush, and rugged terrain,

Assembles and operates technical equipment.

Flexibility to changes in protocol or job assignments.

Assists senior staff members in conducting surveys, field experiments and consults in developing procedures.

Work is completed on an active military installation: must have a valid driver’s license and pass pre-employment background check.

Maintain fleet vehicle records and maintenance as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Preferred Education: Associate’s Degree in natural resources related field (e.g., Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Ecosystem Science and Management, or Environmental Science) or closely related discipline.

 

Miscellaneous:

Ability to lift moderately heavy objects. Ability to exert heavy force. Must be a self-starter and complete objectives in a timely manner. Must have strong networking skills. Must be in good physical condition and ability to work outdoors in rough terrain and inclement weather. Capable of lifting 50 lbs as the job may require long hours or work outdoors involving hiking, bending, lifting etc., and working beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.

Salary:
$39,000 (plus fringe benefits), depending on experience. Scheduled work will be 40 hours per week.
