Job Description:

Starting hours would be 10 – 15 hours per week, taking into account each Intern’s academic schedule and availability. This would entail two or three days a week with a half hour paid lunch each day. The starting wage would be $14.00 , and the duration of the Internship would begin in August or September, and run until the end of the semester at UGA. Additional three month Internships for subsequent semesters may become available for discussion at the end of the fall semester. Scheduling and hours would be organized according to student availability during current semester.

Tasks will vary based on seasonal requirements. All duties/tasks are subject to change/adjust based on the interest, knowledge, and experience of intern, as well as the needs of Beech Hollow Wildflower Farm. During the fall an intern will get hands on experience cleaning and prepping a few dozen species of seeds to prepare them for sowing or stratification. In late fall there would be an introduction to division techniques, and the proper timing for division of an appropriate species. Nursery/Grounds Interns assist with native specimen gardens maintenance; nursery organization and appearance, weeding, pruning, fertilization, IPM, irrigation, seed collection/cleaning, winterizing & de-winterizing the nursery/beds. Assist w/ greenhouse operations; Media mixing, uppotting, dividing, hardening off.

Qualifications:

Interest in Sustainable Ag production, Horticulture (must have organic practices experience, or willing to learn organic practices), Native plants, Native Pollinator Habitats, Nursery Management, Greenhouse propagation, and related fields.

Willing attitude; willing to learn, able to read, research, study to increase skill sets

Should have basic knowledge of working with garden hand tools (shovel, hoe, rake, etc.)

Knowledge of basic safety protocols for hand tools, power tools, farm equipment

Must be physically proficient to complete tasks effectively:

Must be able to work outside in the elements (or in a non-heated greenhouse)

Must be able to stand and/or kneel for extended periods

Must be able to lift 50 pounds

Must have own transportation and valid GA drivers license

Must have proof of US Citizenship or legal residency
