The ODFW fisheries intern program provides valuable training experiences to college students entering the field of fisheries management, while assisting with a variety of district field activities. Interns assist district fisheries biologists and research program staff performing daily management activities such as population surveys, habitat work, and responding to public inquiries. Interns may also participate in a fisheries research program or conservation strategy implementation; occasionally conducting independent duties. Interns gain a wide variety of experiences representing the workload of an ODFW Fish District. The benefit of these opportunities is to recruit and train potential employees seeking careers in fisheries management, research, and conservation. Student interns are expected to gain the ability to develop and refine academic and professional goals as well as understand the structure and operation of a natural resource agency. Primary responsibilities: Assist staff with general fish management activities. Assist staff in conducting fish monitoring and data collection. NOTE: The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. Working Conditions: Frequent work outdoors during inclement weather and may be required to work before and after daylight. Occasionally required to work on weekends. Position may be physically demanding. Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. All internships will be in-person and will not involve telework. Students are only eligible to participate in one internship with ODFW over the course of their postsecondary education.
