You will join a team working to optimize natural climate solutions in southeastern forests and build vibrant economic markets for climate smart forest products. The assigned project may include harvest system evaluations, transportation logistics, business profitability, environmental impact assessment, and evaluation of incentive payments to loggers and landowners. The project further includes a component of evaluating the feasibility of harvesting timber from small and minority owned forests utilizing a system of cluster sales and logger incentives. This project includes a significant amount of interaction and communication with loggers, timber buyers, project supporters, and forest owners. The specific research focus will be structured to align with project and program goals, and will take into consideration the successful candidates interests and strengths. The position is available beginning Summer (June) or Fall (August) 2023. The assistantship will include an annual stipend of $25,000 and tuition waiver. The position is funded for four years. Qualifications: Required qualifications: MF, MFR, MNR, or MS degree in forest resources, natural resources, environmental resources, or a closely related field Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively interact with groups such as loggers, forest owners, and agency, industry, and academic colleagues. The ability to work independently in remote areas with frequent overnight stays away from the main campus. An interest in applied forestry and a desire to help underserved communities to practice sustainable and climate smart forest management.
