The Gettys Lab at the University of Florida is expanding! We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Plant Geneticist to manage the Aquatic & Wetland Plant Science Genetics Lab. This position will directly support our molecular research initiatives, working closely with lab head Dr. Lyn Gettys on genetics research related to eelgrass (Vallisneria), invasive aquatic weeds, and restoration ecology.

Role & Activities
During your tenure with the lab, you will manage the molecular genetics laboratory and oversee high-throughput sample processing. Key responsibilities include:


Molecular Work: Extracting, amplifying, purifying DNA from stakeholder plant samples, and preparing them for sequencing (i.e. Sanger and fragment analysis) at one of our trusted partners. You will also be responsible for analysing the genetics results, conducting bioinformatics and producing detailed genetics reports for a wide variety of customers.

Research Collaboration: Conducting specialized genetics research on eelgrass (Vallisneria) and other aquatic weeds.

High-Throughput Processing: Handling heavy processing loads of up to 400 plant samples per week in a fluid, fast-paced laboratory environment.

Science Communication: Representing the laboratory by confidently presenting research findings to both citizen scientists and peers at professional conferences.
 

Education: MSc or higher in Plant Genetics, Molecular Biology, Botany, or a closely related field, with a strong, demonstrable focus on genetics. Eligible to work in the US.

Technical Expertise: Comprehensive mastery of the entire molecular pipeline, including:
Plant-specific sample preparation, DNA extraction and amplification protocols.
Species-specific methodologies to confirm identification across a wide range of plant taxa.
Bioinformatics and downstream data analysis.
