Job Description:

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to examine the integration of spaceborne multispectral imagery, airborne lidar, UAV-based LiDAR, UAV-derived hyperspectral imagery, and ground-based sensor data acquisitions, with a particular focus on developing our ability to integrate data from different spatial resolutions and at different scales. 

This study is part of the PERSEUS (Promoting Economic Resilience and Sustainability of the Eastern U.S. Forests) project, and it will be focused on hardwoods, mixed hardwoods, and southern pine forests in the Southeastern US. We intend to create a database of value for forest managers and landowners and develop calibration of terrestrial and aerial systems to support automated forest inventories and species identification.

Qualifications:

Education

  • A Ph.D. in forestry or related fields is required.

Knowledge, skills, abilities:

  • The ideal candidate will possess a strong quantitative background in statistical modeling, remote sensing, forestry and knowledge of programming languages like Python or R. Excellent written and oral communication skills, interest in field data collection, and the ability to work independently are expected. Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Physical demands:

  • Must be willing to drive several hours to the research sites across the Southeast U.S., work flexible hours as necessary, be able to lift heavy equipment, and work outdoors under diverse weather conditions.

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (http://www.warnell.uga.edu/) is the oldest forestry school in the Southern United States, counts with 69 faculty, 100 support staff, 250 undergraduates, and 225 graduate students. The School offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Forest Resources, Master of Natural Resources, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the areas of Forestry, Fisheries & Wildlife, Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management, and Natural Resource Management & Sustainability. 

The School is housed in a four-building complex on campus and manages over 20,000 acres of forestlands across the state in support of its teaching, outreach, and research missions.
