Deadline: Wed, 02/22/2023 - 12:00pm Employer: Idaho Department of Fish and Game Job Field: Wildlife Job Type: Full Time Location: Idaho Location Detail: Coeur d'Alene Job Description: The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Principal Wildlife Research Biologist to plan, supervise, and conduct research for wildlife projects. This position will be part of the Wildlife Research program leadership team and will supervise field operations and conduct research to improve wildlife management. The preferred position location is Coeur d’ Alene, but location is negotiable and may include our other regional offices (Lewiston, McCall, Nampa, Jerome, Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and Salmon) or our headquarters office in Boise. Responsibilities: Supervise classified and temporary personnel within the Wildlife Research team. Work closely with wildlife managers to identify research needs and communicate project progress. Provides input for development of goals and priorities for research projects. Plans, organizes, directs, and conducts wildlife research projects. Reviews and prepares project budgets. Trains staff, assigns work, and evaluates performance. Prepares, reviews, edits, and publishes research findings in scientific journals. Identifies specific research data required and appropriate means of collection. Coordinates research activities with other governmental agencies and collaborating entities. Serves as a member of graduate committees for university students. Makes recommendations to management staff based on research findings. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.) Considerable knowledge of: wildlife management practices to include wildlife ecology, habitat requirements, physiology, and population dynamics of wildlife; plant ecology; wildlife and plant sampling techniques; parasites and diseases of wildlife. Good knowledge of procedures and equipment used in wildlife research. Experience: supervising others in wildlife research projects; conducting life history and habitat studies of wildlife; developing work plans; immobilizing and capturing wildlife; developing and interpreting statistical data used in wildlife research; writing reports and research summaries concerning wildlife research. Valid driver's license. Desirable Qualifications: (These qualifications are not required, however if you have related background, it could increase your rating.) Experience partnering with outside agencies, departments, or organizations to facilitate wildlife projects. Considerable knowledge: managing, integrating, and analyzing large wildlife population, habitat, and environmental condition datasets to answer questions relevant to wildlife management; R programming and spatial statistics. The ideal candidate will have project management experience, a Ph.D. in wildlife biology or related natural resources field from an accredited college or university, and strong communications skills in a variety of forums. They will have experience working within a wildlife management agency managing personnel, budgets, and logistics of large wildlife research projects.
