Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

The key responsibilities of this position are focused on guiding the management of pronghorn across New Mexico in the context of state regulations. The position will plan, prioritize, administer, and work with a team to lead all aspects of the Department's pronghorn program including the development and implementation of statewide goals and objectives. The position coordinates statewide biological surveys and makes pronghorn management recommendations. The position monitors population trends and utilizes appropriate modern population models. The biologist will develop recommendations for hunting licenses, research projects, habitat improvement, and landowner engagement.

Tasks include coordination of timely and accurate project updates, oversight of contracts, and the development of technical reports for Department leadership. The position will participate in meetings and assist with public outreach. The position assists with the development and implementation of the Department's pronghorn private land programs including conducting property reviews, developing management plans, and assisting landowners in enrolling their properties into these programs.

Annually, pronghorn surveys are flown using fixed-wing aircraft. The position is responsible for all aspects of this project including logistics and will be the primary observer for all pronghorn surveys.

Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology, or similar related natural resource degree and one (1) year directly related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.  Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
