Background

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant improves the environmental, social and economic health

of the Georgia coast through research, education, training and outreach. We believe an engaged and

informed public support thriving coastal ecosystems and resilient and inclusive communities.



Job Summary

This position serves as a technical resource for coastal communities and the state of Georgia as it relates

to topics such as climate hazards, resiliency planning, sea level rise, coastal processes, coastal flooding or

coastal storms. The University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant Coastal Community

Resilience Specialist is a public service, non-tenured faculty track position in Coastal Georgia. Primary

stakeholders/audience includes academic researchers, municipal staff, and residents. The specialist is

expected to leverage their skills, experience and resources to develop and implement extension and

outreach programs and provide technical assistance to advance coastal resilience. The specialist will work

with existing teams, extension programs, and partners drawing on science, technology, and research data

to educate communities about coastal climate adaptation, coastal flooding and hazard mitigation planning.

The specialist will cultivate and sustain partnerships and integrate diverse perspectives to advance coastal

community resilience.



Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop, implement, assess and evaluate a comprehensive coastal resilience outreach and applied research program working both independently and in collaboration with other Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant and UGA Public Service faculty, academic partners within and outside of UGA, external stakeholders and members of our coastal communities. In particular, this position will be expected to work closely with University of Georgia’s Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems and Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s Defense Community Resilience Program.
  • Provide training, technical assistance, and resources to residents, businesses, communities and other partners to increase their individual and collective capacity to sustain community-based resilience practices.
  • Translate and disseminate science-based research related to coastal climate adaptation, risk communications, coastal flooding and hazard mitigation planning, including related public policy issues to community members in a range of applicable formats.
  • Represent Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant at community events, professional meetings, collaborative working groups and partnerships with other organizations in the field of coastal resilience.
  • Secure extramural funding through grants and/or contracts to support applied research and outreach programs that addresses stakeholder and industry needs
Qualifications:

Required Education/ Experience

• Master’s degree in a discipline related to marine science, environmental science, policy or planning, community development, natural resources management, or a closely related STEM field or an interdisciplinary degree addressing resiliency is required.

• At least 2 years of experience in either program coordination, coastal resilience, coastal risk management, community engagement, providing education and technical assistance to communities or related stakeholders.

• The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Public Service Assistant or Public Service Associate. Rank on hire will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, according to Public Service and Outreach Appointment and Promotion Guidelines found here.



Preferred Education and Experience

• Ph.D in a discipline related to marine science, environmental science, policy or planning, community development, natural resources management, or a closely related STEM field.

• At least 5 years of experience; preference given to experience with community outreach and education.

• Expertise in applying for external resources to support applied research and outreach programming, including grants, fee-for-service, third party reimbursement, and other means.

• Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative climate-related science in the Southeast U.S., particularly Georgia.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Familiarity of coastal and marine environments and issues, particular as it relates to coastal resilience.

• Technical skills in geospatial systems.

• Ability to self-motivate, to work independently and as a member of a team, and to develop annual plans of work which include measurable outcomes.

• Relevant skills applicable to education and outreach, public speaking, facilitation, technical writing, statistical analysis and computer use.

• Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, particularly as it pertains to interpreting/translating research-based technical information for the understanding and use by decision makers, practitioners, and the public.

• Strong ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and to develop productive partnerships and collaborations with diverse stakeholders.

• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

• Work is typically performed in a general office setting and in diverse field settings. Ability to travel on an as needed basis is essential.
