This position is responsible for the review of the environmental impacts from mining by reviewing technical studies, collecting field data, and evaluating designs for remediation and reclamation of mined lands. Duties include reviewing mine permits, conducting periodic onsite inspections, and evaluating environmental compliance and reclamation success. This position works closely with the mining industry, other state and federal agencies, public NGOs, and individuals from the public sector to ensure coordinated permitting and reclamation of mines. The position prepares and delivers presentations, materials for distribution to the public, and represents agency at public meetings and hearings. Qualifications: MMD is seeking candidates with a strong environmental background in wildlife, plant science, soil science, geology, hydrology, ecology, or biology to aid the team in evaluating mine reclamation during the planning and implementation phases as defined by the New Mexico Mining Act. Candidates should have an interest in regulatory oversight and an interest in the environmental aspects of mined land reclamation and the regeneration of heavily impacted ecosystems. Specific skills and knowledge in evaluating environmental data, project management, GIS mapping, computer skills and technical writing. The candidate should have excellent reading, writing and communication skills.
