Deadline: Tue, 10/01/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: Archbold Biological Station Job Field: Wildlife Job Type: Full Time Location: Florida Location Detail: Archbold Biological Station, Venus, FL Job Description: Research Assistant in Plant Ecology We seek a motivated plant ecologist for a Research Assistant position in the Plant Ecology Program of Dr. Aaron David at Archbold Biological Station, located in south-central Florida. This position is for 1 year with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance, and an anticipated start date in November 2024. Archbold is a not-for-profit biological field station devoted to ecological research, conservation, and education. Archbold’s 20,000-acres of natural areas have outstanding examples of central Florida ecosystems and endemic, imperiled species. We have a staff of about 50 with many visiting scientists, an active seminar program, and a relaxed biological station atmosphere. We also work within an extensive regional network of managed areas, both publicly and privately owned. In the Plant Ecology Program, we study nearly two dozen rare species of endemic plants in endangered Florida scrub and related communities, and have unique, multidecadal demographic datasets coupled with detailed fire records. Our research emphasizes conservation biology, plant demography, plant-microbe interactions, restoration ecology, fire ecology, landscape ecology, and fire management. Our group consists of 3-4 full time scientists together with interns, graduate students, and collaborators, and is a stimulating and enjoyable workplace. Plant Ecology Research Assistants are generally tasked with managing or assisting with research projects, supervising staff in the field and laboratory, and helping report findings. The ideal candidate will have specific training or experience in several of the following: plant population biology, botany, fire ecology, Florida ecology, statistical analyses, scientific writing, conservation, or land management. Experience using ArcGIS and/or R is strongly desirable. The Research Assistant will have many professional development opportunities, including attending stakeholder and/or conservation meetings, participating in prescribed burns, organizing educational outreach activities, and attending specialized trainings. Duties include: Leading field data collection, field experiments, and laboratory work Supervising staff Data management and data analysis Herbarium curation Preparing written reports and manuscripts for publication Attending and presenting at scientific meetings Qualifications: Candidate requirements: Either a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of research experience.
