Job Description:

The Forest Modeling Research Cooperative (FMRC) in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech, is hiring a full-time research associate or senior research associate. The FMRC is a leading research cooperative in the region that develops forest growth and yield models, decision support tools, and advanced inventory methodology for both planted and natural forests. The research associate will be directly involved in all aspects of the cooperative’s research program and other day-to-day operations. The Senior Research Associate will provide additional support through developing and leading original research projects that are in line with cooperative goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

 

• M.S (Research Associate) or Ph.D. (Senior Research Associate) in forestry. An advanced degree with significant related work experience may be considered in lieu of the Ph.D. for the senior research associate rank.

• Proficiency in statistics including the use of software (e.g. R, python)

• Experience with forestry field studies and inventory methodology

• Ability to travel and work outdoors in forested environments in inclement weather

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Publication record in peer-reviewed journals (required for Senior Research Associate)

• Programming skills (e.g. C, Fortran)

• Work experience in forest industry, public agencies, or related fields
