The New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (NYCFWRU) is part of the National U.S. Geological Survey Cooperative Research Units Program. The NYCFWRU is run as a cooperative partnership between Federal and State biological resource agencies Cornell University to conduct research on managing wildlife populations and habitats, train wildlife managers, and disseminate information to management agencies. Particular attention is given to the natural resource problems and issues of the Northeastern states, with New York as the focal point, but we also work on national and international conservation issues.

 

The New York Breeding Bird Atlas III (https://ebird.org/atlasny) is hiring a Research Coordinator to lead efforts in measuring relative abundance of breeding birds statewide.

  • The coordinator is responsible for assisting in study design; selecting point count survey locations; developing training and survey materials;

  • Hiring, training, and supervising temporary technicians for summer 2023 and 2024; and managing data and ensuring data quality;

  • Assist with additional research projects such as being responsible for managing passive autonomous recording unit (ARU) equipment to be deployed at point count locations and overseeing targeted surveys for specific groups of birds with low detectability (e.g., grassland and marsh birds);

  • Expected to work in close collaboration with other Atlas staff and team members.

 

This is a term position with full benefits. The term of this position is through July 15, 2024.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination .

  • Must have experience with point count protocols, distance sampling, study design and implementation, data management.

  • Advanced skill in geographic information system (GIS) software is required.

  • Candidates must be able to identify all land and water birds in New York State by sight and sound and have extensive field experience.

  • Must be willing to do field work across the state of New York and to work irregular hours when needed.

  • Willingness to learn new methods and techniques.

  • Must be personable, flexible; possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and oral). Motivated and enthusiastic about working in a group environment.

  • Ability to work autonomously, and make decisions that will result in desired outcomes for projects.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and database management.  Ability to work with spreadsheets and databases.

  • Detail oriented and able to strictly adhere to standard operating procedure. 

  • Ability to create an inclusive, high-quality and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve departmental and university goals. 

  • Ability to change work assignments when needed. 

  • Physically able to lift  10lbs – 20lbs, bend and strength.

  • Awareness that protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements. 

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.  Background check will be required. 

  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant biology and natural resources field.

  • At least 1 year of experience or equivalent in a field of biology Advanced research experience and a M.S. degree preferred.

  • Knowledge of relevant statistical analysis (e.g. hierarchical models) preferred, but not required. 

  • Experience with ARUs (specifically swift units) is desirable.

  • Experience supervising technicians to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
