Job Description:

To lead and manage the applied forest research program at the Department of Forestry (DOF). Continually assess the broad needs and direction for forest research for DOF. Continue to develop the program around Commonwealth, Agency, and landowner needs for practical forest management issues. Plan and conduct research and demonstration in support of best practices for pine and hardwood silviculture in Virginia. Prepare written reports and oral presentation for internal and external customers, and maintain an active role of technology transfer and training of field personnel. Interact with related forest research cooperatives, universities, and research institutions to seek information and collaborate on topics of common interest and need. Collaborate with agency and allied efforts to restore American chestnut, longleaf and shortleaf pine, other important diminished tree species, and management of invasive species. Manage research program, personnel, budgets and grants. Seek, investigate, analyze, and communicate regarding issues or topics as needed by agency leadership and personnel

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, skills, abilities and or competencies required to successfully perform the work: Experience with designing, installing, and measuring applied research studies. Demonstrated success in writing forestry-related scientific articles that have been accepted in the scientific community. At least three years of experience in forest research or applied forest management. Demonstrated ability in scientific field sampling, data analysis, synthesis, and conclusion, including ability to prepare scientific papers. Knowledge and experience in silviculture, forest management, with a focus on eastern conifer and hardwood forests. Excellent knowledge of math, statistics, forest inventory, field sampling and measurement technics. Experience in interacting and collaborating with forest researchers. Demonstrated ability to explore, combine, and summarize existing literature and information Ability to prepare technical reports and grant proposals. Ability to manage budgets and provide leadership, and supervise and manage personnel. Ability to make effective oral presentations on technical subjects and teach and train field personnel and other audiences. Ability to work and perform independently and in a non-structured environment. Ability with personal computer including Microsoft Suite and Outlook. Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both in writing and orally in the English language. Ability to walk, negotiate and work for extended times in outdoor forest situations and terrain, including periods of high and low temperatures, variable conditions, and insects and other hazards. Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; bend, stoop, and reach; lift up to 25 pounds to chest level; drive a car, van, or other similar vehicle; During periods of emergency response, incumbent may have abnormal/ longer work periods and/or highly stressful situations may occur.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills with Geographic Information Systems. Experience and knowledge in forest genetics. Author or contributor to forest science-based articles or published research. Virginia pesticide applicators license, or ability to obtain within six months. Field experience in developing silvicultural prescriptions and applying forest management practices in Virginia or similar forest conditions.

$63,000-$80,000
