Job Description:

Weyerhaeuser is searching for a Research Seedling Grower/Research Coordinator to join our Southern Timberlands research team. As a Research Seedling Grower, you will work with key scientists across the southern Weyerhaeuser organization in Tree improvement, Production Forestry, and Regeneration to coordinate and execute seedling research. The Research Seedling Grower may also support other research activities involving seedling quality, survival, and growth in the nursery and field, as well as various aspects of genetics/tree improvement and tree physiology.

 

The Research Seedling Grower is an individual contributor role and includes both indoors and outdoors involving activities that require crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying up to 40 pounds, and repetitive activities such as entering data and sample preparation. This position reports to the Southern Tree Improvement Platform Manager and is located at the Oliver Tree Improvement Centre, approximately 18 miles from Sylvania, GA and Statesboro, GA.

Key Functions

 

Grow the highest quality seedlings for all Southern Timberlands Technology research programs

Maintain the Sylvania research nursery, greenhouse, and laboratory facility and equipment for proper working order.

Coordinate research activities with other members of Strategy & Technology

Assist scientists with transfer of information and technology to Timberlands Operations and troubleshoot technology implementation

Administer Contracts for different research projects

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree (or higher) with 2 years of experience in Horticulture, Forestry, Plant Physiology, or related field

Experience operating and growing plants in a greenhouse

Good understanding of genetics and tree improvement, experimental design, data analysis, and the importance of data quality

Good mechanical skills, with the ability to maintain equipment, and make minor repairs as needed

Contract administration experience, both in preparing contracts and managing the contractor

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and GIS applications

Good communication and organizational skills

Ability to work collaboratively across technical disciplines and work well in team situations

Demonstrated ability to work safely in a nursery, greenhouse, forestry, or related operations

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines

Proactive problem-solving skills

Commitment to safety and focused on safely executing work every day and supporting the company safety vision

Knowledgeable of and licensed in the use of herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer application

Able to identify nursery and seedling pests (insects, diseases, abiotic)

Willing and able to tow trailers

Willing and able to travel up to 20% of the time
