The Department of Forestry: The Department of Forestry is one of three departments in the College of Forest Resources and the Mississippi State University’s Forest and Wildlife Research Center. Departmental activities include undergraduate and graduate on-campus and Distance Education instruction, research, and extension programs in forestry and natural resources. The Department has excellent facilities in Thompson Hall on the campus of Mississippi State University. The MSU John W. Starr Memorial Forest, an 8,244-acre teaching and research forest, and the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and Tombigbee National Forest are near the University and used for teaching and research activities. Mississippi State University is a Carnegie High Research Activity institution and a land-grant university which includes the Mississippi State University Extension Service. The University is located in Starkville, Mississippi a beautiful college town in northeast Mississippi (www.msstate.edu/web/about). Responsibilities: The primary position responsibilities are to lead a team of field technicians in measuring forest vegetation, collecting soil and biomass samples, processing and analyzing samples in the laboratory, and recording data with proper documentation. The successful candidate may supervise employees but supervision it not the main focus of the job. The above essential duties are representative of major duties in this position. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or related field. • One year experience related to essential duties and responsibilities listed above. • Must have a valid driver’s license. Substitutions: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to drive long distances and spend long days in the field. • Ability to work with others. • Ability to walk long distances and carry 30+ pounds of gear. • Knowledge of and proficiency with MS Office. • Good organizational skills. • Ability to pay attention to detail. • Ability to make reasonable decisions in the absence of directions. Miscellaneous: Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Regularly involves lifting bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. Injuries may require professional treatment.
