Miscellaneous:

Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge: Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a 5,618-acre barrier island located 90 miles south of Savannah, Georgia. The island is comprised of maritime forest uplands, saltwater and freshwater marsh wetlands, and over eight miles of dune covered coastline. Blackbeard Island is recognized as an index beach, where protecting loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta caretta) nesting sites is critical. The island also provides valuable habitat for numerous migratory birds, including threatened and endangered species. Invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are abundant on the refuge and represent the greatest threat to native habitats and wildlife. Therefore, the primary purpose of this project is to protect resources and enhance habitat for nesting sea turtles, migratory birds, and other native wildlife by reducing the density of wild pigs on Blackbeard Island NWR.
