Job Description:

The SilvaLab at the University of Minnesota Department of Forest Resources is seeking a Researcher 4 to join a group of interdisciplinary scientists working on applied research and trainings in forested ecosystems.  The researcher will have to opportunity to work on two projects – 1. biochar potential effect on survival and growth in forested ecosystems including below ground processes and 2. Floodplain dynamics along the Upper Mississippi River.  The Researcher will also be involved in the planning and logistics for the first module of the National Advanced Silviculture Program (NASP) hosted at the Cloquet Forestry Center in the middle of the summer (July 2023).  

The individual will work in collaboration with scientists and researchers from the University of Minnesota and multiple partner organizations and Tribal Nations. The position consists of (1) field or green house data collection and analysis including data management (50%), the logistics, set-up, and involvement in the National Advanced Silviculture program (30%), and sharing research through multiple formats including presentations and peer reviewed publications (20%). 

For the two research projects, the individual will use various analytical and assessment approaches to quantify metrics of stand structure, composition, and diversity across multiple spatial and temporal scales to develop increased basic understanding of forest ecosystems and applied knowledge related to forest management.  

The position is initially available starting January 1, 2023 and is available for 1 year at $51,000 per year. Salary may be commensurate with experience.  The position may be extended depending on candidate performance and funding availability. The position will be located at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, local remote work is possible. The approximate percent of time on site (on the St. Paul campus) is 40%, remote field sites is 30%, and virtual or flexible is 30%. 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: BS/BA in forestry, silviculture, natural resource sciences, biometrics, applied forest ecology, or a closely related field and 4 years of experience working in forestry or applied ecology OR a MS in forestry, silviculture, natural resource sciences, biometrics, applied forest ecology, or a closely related field and 2 years of experience. A strong work ethic, the ability to work independently and cooperatively with researchers and analysts, and demonstrated analytical skills and writing capability are required.  A demonstrated ability to work successfully with a varied mix of internal and external partners from diverse communities and cultures using tact, diplomacy, initiative, and sound judgement.  

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with multiple types of data including high-frequency data, spatially mapped data, long-term datasets; experience working with forest managers; proficiency in statistical models and programs (R, SAS, etc.), publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
