Deadline: Thu, 05/16/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: Mississippi State University Job Field: Forestry Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Mississippi Location Detail: Mississippi State, Mississippi Job Description: The Department of Forestry at Mississippi State University is hosting a summer National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program from June - August, 2024. The “Ecology and Management for Resilient and Adapted Forests” REU program is recruiting nine students to participate in active research under the guidance and supervision of faculty mentors who are dedicated researchers and educators in the Department of Forestry. The program will take place on the Mississippi State University campus near Starkville, MS. This REU program aims to: (i) welcome, include, and serve students from underrepresented groups to increase diversity and awareness of career opportunities in forestry, (ii) train talented undergraduate students to become independent, science-literate researchers by challenging them with real-world problems in forestry, and (iii) develop methods and products to manage forests for resilience and to promote and strengthen them as a climate change solution. In addition to conducting research, students will participate in orientation, social activities, and professional development seminars and workshops to develop their scientific writing, communication, and data management and analysis skills, along with their knowledge of philosophy and diversity in forestry and current topics in forest science. At the end of the program, REU participants will present their research projects at the summer 2024 Mississippi State University Undergraduate Research Symposium, and have the opportunity to publish their research with their mentor(s) in a refereed journal. Qualifications: To be eligible for this REU program, you must be (1) at least 18 years old, (2) entering or returning to an undergraduate degree program in Fall 2024, and (3) a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students who will graduate by June 2024 are not eligible to apply. Students from groups historically excluded and underrepresented in forestry, including Black and Indigenous People of Color, female, LGBTQ+, first-generation college students, and students from low-income households, are particularly encouraged to apply. Preference will also be given to students outside of Mississippi State University, but from Mississippi or other parts of the southeastern United States. No prior research experience is required but priority will be given to students who have completed at least one course in biology or a related discipline. The program is a 10-week, full-time experience, so applicants should not be simultaneously engaged with other jobs or coursework. How to Apply: https://www.forestry.msstate.edu/reu/
