The Migration Monitor will conduct daily point counts of migrating waterbirds. The monitor is responsible for a minimum of five hours of observations per day, five days a week, and an additional hour per day for compiling daily data and seasonal updates. The primary focus is on waterbird identification and counting, however, all migrants are to be recorded (significant passerine migrations are annually observed here).


Applicants with the ability to identify most regularly occurring eastern North American bird species, especially waterbirds in flight, are preferred. The average seasonal count is 60,000 birds. The count is conducted in all kinds of weather. The initial stint of each day is from one-half hour before sunrise to a minimum of 3 hours after sunrise. Other observation hours can be at random. Necessary equipment includes binoculars and a spotting scope, both of which can be provided if needed. The monitor will also be responsible for communicating with visitors to Schoodic Point who may be curious about the research being conducted.

Duties:
● Conduct daily migration monitoring and data collection, 5 days a week. The 5-day count week includes Saturday and Sunday. Document any rarities observed.
● Maintain the migration count Excel spreadsheet. Submit a daily eBird checklist. Post daily details as appropriate on social media.
● Be prepared to greet and converse with visitors and occasional educational groups.
● Collaborate and coordinate with Schoodic Institute staff and select partners as necessary.
● Produce end-of-season summary report (template will be provided).
● The work requires some lifting and relocation of material /equipment to various campus facilities. Considerable walking, stooping, and bending are required. The work may require performing duties in inclement weather.

Required Skills and Knowledge:
● Ability to identify (eastern) North American birds, especially waterbirds in flight, using a combination of spotting scope and binoculars.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Organizational skills and experience managing data.
● Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
● Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and Google Apps.

Location Detail:
Field site: The point count location is at Schoodic Point, which is within walking distance of campus housing. However, past monitors found it helpful to have a car. The 5-day count week includes Saturday and Sunday.

Housing: Residence is required and provided on the Schoodic Institute campus. Housing in a private bedroom as part of a shared apartment will be provided. Note that the nearest city with full services, Ellsworth, is a 45-minute drive away. Although not required, personal transportation is highly recommended.

Salary:
$14.65/hour for 30 hours a week
