Do you love to work outside, have a sense of humor, and enjoy working with children? Spend a season in the sunny Carolinas as a School Year Programs Instructor with YMCA Camp Thunderbird! Located on beautiful Lake Wylie, the Environmental Education Center and Conference & Retreat Program provide unique learning experiences for school groups and community groups. Instructors teach classes during the week for our Environmental Education Center and lead programs for visiting retreat groups. Our curriculum of 24 classes range in topics from aquatic, forest, and wildlife ecology to astronomy, pioneer study, canoeing, and team building. Two evenings a week, instructors lead meals and evening programs. Weekend work is required on a rotating basis with two days off per week. Compensation includes $400/week, staff housing, most meals, free internet, a complimentary Charlotte YMCA membership, and a staff training period that offers CPR, first aid, and lifeguard certification. Staff live on-site with their own bedrooms and shared living space. Previous experience working with children is highly recommended. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Provide safe programming for all participants on weekdays and weekends including but not limited to adults on retreats, students participating in environmental education field trips, and children participating in Homeschool programs. - Promote positive interactions within participant groups and learning groups. - Create a positive learning environment for all students participating environmental education field trips to camp. - Work weekday and weekend programming for visiting groups on a varying schedule. - Maintain a good working relationship with parents, coworkers, supervisors, dining hall staff, administrative staff, and maintenance staff. - Cooperate in maintaining the facilities and grounds, and see that facility equipment is used properly and returned promptly in good condition. - Take part in all training or in-service activities to develop proficiencies required to perform job responsibilities. Qualifications: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum 2 years experience in education, recreation, or related field. Proficiency in teaching the program curriculum and concepts Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances Interest in working with children and youth, exercising sound emotional maturity, moral character, judgement, integrity and leadership capability. Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate in a positive manner with participants and staff Safety certifications and required trainings upon hire in accordance with required standards. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 4-year college degree in related field such as education or recreation Knowledge in areas of camp programming and outdoor recreation Substitute or teaching experience PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work irregular work hours and weekends. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency. Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day.
