Description: The Silviculture and Applied Forest Health Lab at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is hiring a full-time field crew (one crew lead and one crew member) for 3 months (~mid-May to mid-August) to help with ongoing aspen monitoring, a collaborative project with USDA Forest Service partners. The project’s objective is to assess aspen health with a particular focus on an emerging invasive insect, oystershell scale. The crew will be primarily working outside and based in Flagstaff, AZ.

 

Responsibilities: The crew will install and re-measure aspen monitoring plots and collect samples for related research projects, on national forests near Flagstaff, Arizona. Responsibilities for both positions include taking standard forest measurements (e.g., dbh, height, crown ratio), collecting samples and identifying insects and diseases that affect aspen. The crew lead position will additionally be responsible for leadership including ensuring all data are collected correctly, making logistical decisions (including related to safety) in the field, backing up data regularly, and communicating with university and Forest Service staff.

Qualifications:

These positions require a valid driver’s license, background check and ability to become authorized university drivers.

Ability to travel overnight, including camping; these are required occasionally (per diem or food in lieu of per diem is provided for overnight trips).

Background in forestry, ecology, natural resources, or a similar field preferred (required for crew lead).

Experience or interest in forest insects and diseases, field work and research preferred (required for crew lead).

Applicants must be willing and able to carefully follow detailed protocol, work 10-hr days in the summer heat and/or lightning and heavy rain/hail and tolerate adverse conditions in the field.

Crew Lead: $20/hr

Crew Member: $17/hr

Crew will use a university vehicle to travel to and from field sites. Animals other than service animals are not allowed in university vehicles.

Per diem or food in lieu of per diem is provided for overnight trips

Housing is not provided

Crew Lead $20/hr; Crew Member $17/hr
