Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

MAJOR DUTIES:  Based at the J. Strom Thurmond Project Office, serves as a Seasonal Park Ranger within the Recreation Management team. Thurmond is a large multiple-purpose lake project consisting of a Recreation Program that manages 51 Corps operated recreation areas.  Selectee will also gain experience in Natural Resources Management, Shoreline Management, and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Contracting that provides high quality facility maintenance services. The season typically runs from April until September, depending on workload and projects the dates may be extended or shortened. This position works primarily days, evenings, and weekends, including holidays, throughout the recreation season. Opportunities to gain experience in:

  • Visitor assistance & public safety
  • Patrols by vehicle, foot, and boat
  • Working with the public in a positive manner
  • Explaining and enforcing park rules and regulations
  • Recreation area management to include, but not limited to, campground management and R1S reservation system administration, day use area management and recreation use fee/annual pass program, project volunteer program, aids to navigation and project sign programs, data collection/input, law enforcement liaison, partnering efforts, and water safety/public involvement programs.
  • Shoreline management, resource protection, & permit handling
  • Water safety and mission education, including group programs
  • Fisheries & wildlife habitat management
  • Water quality monitoring
  • Administration and quality assurance of contracts
  • Working in a federal government agency environment

Patrol parks and provide Visitor Assistance. Support the recreation mission, programs, and activities.
