Deadline: Mon, 02/26/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: Georgia Department of Natural Resources Job Field: Other Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Georgia Location Detail: Little St. Simons Island, Georgia Job Description: This is an hourly, seasonal position (40 hours/week) in the unclassified service of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The position will be located on Little St. Simons Island (LSSI). Housing and meals are provided. Responsibilities, qualifications, and other pertinent information are as follows: Start Date: May 1st, 2024 (no later than May 15) End Date: September 30th, 2024 Responsibilities: The successful applicant will work under the supervision of the state’s Sea Turtle Program Coordinator and will work closely with the ecological management staff of Little St. Simons Island. The primary responsibility is the daily monitoring of sea turtle nesting on Little St. Simons Island. Activities will include locating and marking all sea turtle nests, relocating threatened nests, assessing hatching success, assisting in the lethal removal of nest predators, and monitoring for stranded turtles. There are also educational components to the position that include weekly turtle presentations and beach walks as part of the Little St. Simons Island guest program. The successful applicant may also participate in other beach management projects including shorebird and seabird monitoring. Over the course of the monitoring season, the applicant will work with volunteers and island staff. Work may be performed at night, during weekends and holidays, or in very difficult field conditions. The successful applicant’s daily monitoring activities will include a strenuous bicycle ride (approximately 18 miles/day) with field equipment to and along the beach. Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that may include heat, wind, rain, soft sand, and biting insects. The sea turtle utility worker will have one day off per week and must be flexible about days off. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Candidates must have some knowledge of general biology and biological data collection techniques, and experience with computer databases. Candidates should be capable of working independently and as part of a team. Candidates should be enthusiastic, positive, and be able to communicate effectively. Candidates need to be in excellent physical condition and be able to lift 50 lbs. The successful applicant must be a self-starter and be able to independently begin work before sunrise. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Completion of at least one high school level course or at least one year duration in biology. Preferred Qualifications: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Preference will be given to applicants who have prior field experience and possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology or a related field. Miscellaneous: Little St. Simons Island Background: Little St. Simons Island, Georgia, is an 11,000-acre private barrier island that is preserved in perpetuity through a conservation easement. The island is home to The Lodge, an immersive vacation destination for no more than 32 overnight guests, and the Center for Coastal Conservation, a collaborative effort advancing conservation on the Island and throughout coastal Georgia. The position is live-on, and the island is only accessible by boat (we run a ferry daily). Housing is provided on-site, but we cannot accommodate partners or children. The conservation easement on the property prohibits bringing animals onto the island, so pets are not allowed.
