Job Description:

This position is responsible for the overall management of the Bear Creek Educational Forest programs on the Lake Talquin State Forest.

 

Guide the continual development of the Bear Creek Educational Forest.  Oversee and implement the forest educational curriculum.  Create and maintain partnerships with local school districts, counties, universities, and research centers.  Promote forest education programs at the Bear Creek Educational Forest by participating in public speaking engagements. Assist in developing marketing plans and strategies for information, education, and recreational opportunities on Bear Creek Educational Forest and Lake Talquin State Forest.  Promote and conduct working forest educational programs throughout the Tallahassee Forestry Center.  Manage the self-interpretive trails and the state forest arboretum.

 

Assist with resource management operations on state forests within the Tallahassee Forestry Center including, but not limited to, prescribed burning, timber marking, forest inventory, boundary maintenance, vegetation management, non-native invasive species control, and timber sales monitoring.

 

Provide wildfire and emergency response support as directed.  Assist in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans, and hazardous fuels mitigation.  Assist in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulations.

 

Assist County Foresters with FFS Cooperative Forestry Assistance programs such as landowner assistance, community outreach and education, and CFA program inspections.

 

Maintain assigned equipment such as vehicles, hand tools, and computers.

 

Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree with a major in Forestry or related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional forestry experience; or

 

A master’s degree with a major in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional forestry experience.

 

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field obtained outside the United States must either: 1) be obtained from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university in addition to the applicable required experience above; or 2) curriculum must include at least two (2) of the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration or Forest Management in addition to the applicable required experience listed above.  NOTE:  Applicants will be required to provide a copy of their equivalency transcript showing the attained required courses listed above.

 

NOTE: ALL POSITIONS WITHIN THIS CLASS REQUIRE POSSESSION OF A VALID DRIVER LICENSE.
