Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Serves as Branch Chief overseeing all natural resources management actions at the direction of and in support of the State Environmental Division Director and Federal Supervisory Environmental Specialist, responsible for implementing and administering a wide range of environmental natural resources management programs for Atterbury-Muscatatuck. Major program areas include forestry, wildland fire, habitat management/restoration, threatened and endangered species management and compliance, game and non-game species management, and invasive species control. Familiarity with cultural resources management, spatial data/GIS systems, surface waters, NEPA and/or heavy equipment would be beneficial. Responsibilities are state-wide and include a 35,000 acre training site, a 1,000 acre training site, a 6,000 acre impact area, over 200 acres of impoundments, over 200 acres of wetlands and 170 stream miles, over 20,000 acres of forest, nearly 7,000 acres of grassland, a 650 acre urban training site and a 650 acre cantonment/administrative area. The position ensures compliance with all environmental laws and regulations and provides long-term management and supervision for Atterbury-Muscatatuck environmental programs and personnel. The purpose of this position is to maintain or restore ecosystem services supportive of the military training mission.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
•Directly supervises 3 environmental professionals at Camp Atterbury. Responsible for a total of 9 full time staff and seasonal staff.
•Perform supervisory administrative duties. Duties include approving leaves, performing service ratings, providing counseling, and keeping Supervisory Environmental Specialist apprised of program status.
•Schedule work assignments; set priorities; directs and reviews work; trains new employees; hires new employees, participates in grievance procedures.
•Responsible for implementing and administering programs, contracts or other activities to obtain and/or maintain compliance with environmental laws and regulations regarding natural resources.

•Provides oversight to implementation of the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP), Forestry Program and Biology Program. This includes but is not limited to forest management, forest improvement, invasive species control, threatened and endangered species management, game species management, grassland management, planning level surveys, wildland fire and other natural resources media areas.
•Provide oversight to the wildland fire program.
•Coordinates activities with Post Commander, staff and Federal/State regulatory agencies.
•Coordinates on-site inspections with regulatory agencies and follow-up with appropriate documentation.
•Conducts and/or coordinates necessary environmental data gathering actions, studies, field investigations, or remedial actions.
•Identifies project funding requirements and prepare contract statements of Work.
•Coordinates with the Post natural resource manager for implementing and administering programs, contracts, or other actions to provide for appropriate natural resource management and/or protection.
•Coordinates with other facility management sections to schedule work and/or provide input on policies and procedures.
•Act as liaison/point-of-contact between Post environmental staff and training units.
•Performs environmental briefings for various levels of units in training in coordination with the Post operations office.
•Acts as point of contact for Post Commander on environmental matters.
•Responds to, request information for, perform tasks for, and implements projects for the Post Commander.

What You'll Need for Success:
•Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or policy, natural resource management, or related field.
•Minimum or four years experience in the environmental management field of which at least 2 years serving in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
•Experience either working for or with the military preferred.
•Knowledge of Federal, State, and local environmental laws and regulations.
•Ability to prepare and review technical reports and findings.
•Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
•Ability to traverse difficult terrain and structures.

•Knowledge of sampling procedures and quality assurance protocols.
•Other combinations of experience and education will be evaluated on an individual basis.
