Senior Reclamation Specialist

The Mining and Minerals Division - Mining Act Reclamation Program is seeking applications for the position of Senior Reclamation Specialist. The position is a senior level, scientist/specialist position within the Mining Act Reclamation Program .. The incumbent is responsible for the review of the environmental impacts from mining by reviewing technical studies, collecting field data, and evaluating designs for remediation and reclamation or mined lands. Duties will involve the review of mine permits and conducting periodic onsite inspections , and evaluating environmental compliance and reclamation success. Works closely with the mining industry, other state and federal regulatory agencies, public NGOs and individuals form the public sector to ensure coordinated permitting and reclamation of mines. Prepares and delivers presentations, materials for distribution to the public and represents agency at public meetings, hearings and school presentations. Responds to members of the public to address informational requests.

As a technical team member with the Mining Act Reclamation Program, the incumbent assists the Program in evaluating mine permit applications related to the operation and reclamation of mined lands. The incumbent participates in inspections and evaluates environmental conditions present on mining operations. The incumbent looks at environmental conditions which include: vegetation, soils, wildlife, air, water, site stability, and public safety. The incumbent also assists in the evaluation of cost estimates and financial assurance proposals related to mined land clean up and mitigation. The incumbent will assist in the development of permits for operations involved in mining and exploration. The incumbent works closely with the mining industry, other state and federal regulatory agencies, public NGOs and individuals of the public to ensure coordinated permitting and reclamation of mines. Prepares and delivers presentations, materials for distribution to the public and represents agency at public meetings, hearings and school presentations. Responds to members of the public to address informational requests and concerns about ongoing mining operations.

The position is a senior level, professional position within the Mining Act Reclamation Program responsible for ensuring consistency and timely agency action regarding the reclamation of permitted mines and mills in the state of New Mexico. This position will interact, co-regulate and collaborate with other state and federal agencies involved in hard rock mine and mill operation and reclamation. The position provides support to the Mining Act Reclamation Program and Mining and Minerals Division for the review and approval of mine permits, and then the continued field and administrative monitoring of approved permits for compliance with the Mining Act Rules

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's of Science in a relevant discipline, within the fields of environmental science, physical science or natural resources. Also candidates should have an interest in regulatory oversight, and an interest in the environmental aspects of mined land reclamation, or the regeneration of heavily impacted ecosystems. Specific skills and knowledge in evaluating environmental data, project management, GIS mapping, computer skills and technical writing. Experience in public speaking and meeting facilitation. The candidate should have good reading skills, writing skills, and communication skills.
