Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs.  The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina

The Service Forester provides professional oversight and expertise in the forest management program to multiple counties in assigned District.  Position requires:

  • Collecting and analyzing forest data to provide technical advice to landowners
  • Writing management plans for non-industrial private forest landowners
  • Interacts with consulting foresters, as well as other professional state and local government land managers for forestry related technical assistance.  
  • Conducting environmental compliance inspections for regulations related to forestry activities
  • Responds in times of emergency such as wildland fires and natural disasters.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Driver’s License
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office  
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of forest management
  • Knowledge of collecting and analyzing forestry data
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.
  • Ability to be self-motivated, a team player, and able to remain claim under stress 


 

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Wildland Firefighter II qualified under the National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards
  • Experienced with prescribed fire
  • Experienced in public speaking
  • Forested wetland and water quality regulations
  • Management plan writing
  • Mapping grade GPS units and ArcMap GIS software

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

 

You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.


Bachelor's degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution; or registered by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Foresters; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
