Job Description:

The Team provides pre-sale timber services to forests located throughout the southern United States and nationally, when requested. Pre-sale services include timber marking, timber sale boundary layout, timber cruising, and GPS/GIS field work. Other opportunities may include wildlife habitat improvement, insect and disease prevention or mitigation, prescribed fire, wildland fire, and recreational services to requesting forests.

The Team and the work we do is a foundation of timber prescription implementation within the national forest system.

After forests are surveyed, forest plans are developed, and public input is attained; our team is a major factor in forest prescriptions becoming reality.

Crew members learn to read, interpret, and implement forest prescriptions across varied landscapes and different ecosystems throughout the United States.

Crew members become certified/advanced timber cruisers and proficient timber markers, while learning the policy and procedures for the timber program within the US. Forest Service. These positions prepare new employees the foundation they need to further their career with the US Forest Service.

This work is conducted year-round in all types of weather and terrain through a true team concept. All members are trained and encouraged to step into roles of leadership.

Miscellaneous:

The Southern Region Timber Strike Team is a program area within the Southern Region of the U.S. Forest Service. The Strike Team consists of four crews located throughout the southern United States. Crews are located at Gainesville GA, Blacksburg VA, Jackson MS, and Pineville LA. Each crew consists of a crew supervisor, lead timber marker, and six crew members.

Salary:
These entry level positions are GS 4/5/6 career
conditional appointments. Most entry level
applicants will be hired as a GS 4-Step 1. The rate
will increase with yearly experience. Pay rates
could also be higher based on locality
adjustments. All pay rates for locations may be
obtained by following the link below (All rates are
"Rest of US" except for the Gainesville, GA
location which receives the Atlanta pay
adjustment).
