Job Description

 

The Staff Forester I position creates, promotes and executes the various agency programs within the region, assists and coordinates with districts to create new educational programs and tools for traditional and non-traditional landowners. The position also provides local leadership in the areas of emergency management, forest pest management, landowner assistance and related programs, promotes and demonstrates the concept of teamwork in the district, region and state and represents the State of Texas and the Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) as a professional public servant in their attitude, their actions and their leadership.

 

 

Responsibilities:

-Work with District Foresters to equip small acreage and non-traditional landowners to make informed decisions regarding forest land management. Includes local leadership pertaining to natural resource issues, community and urban forestry and direct landowner assistance. May require exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sunlight, rain and extreme temperatures.

 

-Delivery of conservation education and landowner outreach programs. Development of new programs/tools/methods to reach non-traditional landowners in forest management, forest health, forest protection, etc.

 

-In coordination with the Water Resources Program, conduct Best Management Practices (BMP) implementation monitoring and assist with the delivery of BMP training workshops when requested. May require lifting and carrying heavy objects, standing for extended periods and walking long distances.

 

-Create/foster partnerships to expand the reach of TAMFS programs in the region. Will require extensive written and verbal communication skills.

 

-Support of local and statewide wildland fire suppression and All-Hazard Emergency Response incidences.

 

-Employee must manage and account for assigned credit card(s) in accordance with state law and agency policies.

 

-Other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions: This is a field related job. Work is occasionally done in remote forested locations under various geographic and climatic conditions. Emergency response activities may require long working hours with minimal rest, in primitive conditions and in a harsh environment such as smoke, rough terrain, dusty roads, etc. Persons serving in emergency response operations must meet a physical fitness standard, which includes successfully completing a two-mile walk in 30 minutes or less while carrying a 25lb pack. Emergency response may result in exposure to emotionally stressful situations for extended periods of time. Work may include out-of-town travel and overtime hours. Employee must carry a communication device to facilitate 24-hour availability. Employee will be required to respond to dispatcher within 30 minutes of receiving an emergency page, notification or alert. May require operating heavy equipment with related exposure to equipment vibrations and noise.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from a SAF accredited program.

 

Preferred Education: Master's degree or higher in Forest Management from a SAF accredited program.

Required Experience: None - entry level position

 

Preferred Experience: Conservation and environmental education programming, working with landowners, program implementation and planning.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required Knowledge: Computer skills

 

Preferred Knowledge: Database management. General knowledge of forest practices

 

Required Skills: Written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking.

 

Preferred Skills: GIS

Require Abilities: Work independently. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

 

 

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

Required: Valid Texas driver’s license.

 

Preferred: SAF Certified Forester. TFA Accredited Forester. Texas Pesticide Applicator's License. ISA Certified Arborist. FFT-1/ICT5 NWCG.
