Summer Field Technician (amphibians and fish)

We are seeking to hire one motivated summer field technician position for a student looking to gain some hands-on field experience for six weeks. The student will join MS student Aurora Fowler for six weeks of field work and data collection. Students will gain skills in a variety of field techniques including tadpole sampling, fish seining, auditory bird surveys, and water quality sampling. Start and end dates are flexible but there will be no flexibility for the technician to have extended time off during the employment period. The technician will stay in rustic shared field accommodations and will be provided transportation to and from the field sites. Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that may include heat, biting insects, wind, and rain. The technician will also have the chance to be exposed to other forms of data collection including the deployment and maintenance of automated recording units (ARUs) and connect with local state and federal conservation agents working on the project. The successful applicant will have a flexible schedule, working 40 hours per week with one full day off per week. Fieldwork will be done throughout the states of Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska along the Missouri River. This is a full-time, seasonal position that runs May through the end of June (flexible).

Technician Duties:

  • Conducting dipnet surveys for larval anurans
  • Assisting with fish seining
  • Helping to conduct auditory bird surveys
  • Assisting with deployment and maintenance of automated recording units (ARUs)
  • Collecting water quality samples and assisting with solid phase extraction processes
  • The technician will also have the chance to connect with local state and federal conservation agents throughout the region

Other tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • Some undergraduate classwork completed in relevant fields (ecology, environmental science, natural resources)
  • Previous field experience is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate must be in good physical condition and able to tolerate biting insects.
  • The applicant must be a self-starter and be able to work both independently and as a team. Candidates should be enthusiastic, positive, and be able to communicate effectively.
