The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Resource Assistants Program (RAP) is a rigorous and immersive, paid internship for individuals who are interested in conservation, natural and cultural resources, environmental management, research and development, or other career opportunities with land management agencies. The program emphasizes the engagement of current students, recent graduates, and underrepresented populations in natural and cultural resources work as Resource Assistants (RAs) as per 16 U.S. Code Chapter 37, Subchapter II - Resource Assistants Code §1725. The position is within the Sustainable Forest Management Research (SFMR) group in the Washington Office of Research and Development (WO-R&D). SFMR serves the Forest Service and R&D-specific deputy area, building and advancing support for the work of R&D and recognition of the public value that work creates. Specific SFMR program areas include agroforestry, air quality, bioclimatology and climate change, entomology and pathology, fire ecology and fuels, genetics, invasive species, landscape ecology, and silviculture – reflecting the many aspects of forest science and management. Responsibilities and Duties

● Performs work that contributes to mission accomplishment and agency priorities (e.g. supporting development of science assessments, briefings and presentations)

● Adheres to agency and office policies, procedures, and rules

● Develops and manages engagement and tracks training and mentoring sessions as part of individual learning workplan and for partner record keeping

● Takes advantage of learning and developing opportunities

● Potential limited travel to support workshop(s)

● Develops professional goals and applies critical feedback to improve performance

● Completes educational requirements and obtains transcripts before requesting Certificate of Hiring Eligibility

● May acquire eligibility to be converted to a permanent Forest Service position or apply to merit positions through USAJobs

Qualifications:

Qualifications Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents over 17 years old. Preference is given to individuals enrolled in institutions of higher education, especially minority-serving institutions. Minimum Requirements

● Completion of 2 years at an accredited university, an Associate’s degree, or higher (preference for Bachelor’s or Master’s degree)

● US citizenship or permanent residency. RAs must undergo a government background check if selected.

● Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for February 2023
