Job Description:

The Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology (FWCE) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) announces an opening for an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Disease Ecology. The Department seeks a candidate to establish a competitively funded research program in wildlife disease ecology to address important scientific questions and societal issues of relevance to the state of New Mexico, as well as regionally, nationally and internationally. This is a tenure track, 9-month position with an allocation of effort that includes expectation of mission-oriented research, teaching and outreach. Qualifications include a Ph.D. (awarded by hire date) in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Veterinary Sciences, Biological Sciences or related field. Candidates with post-doctoral experience are strongly preferred. The successful candidate will show a commitment to excellence in research and teaching, including specific evidence of: (1) interest and expertise in wildlife disease ecology and pathogen diagnostic tools as applied to natural resource conservation, wildlife management, One Health issues, eco-epidemiology or related areas; (2) potential to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels on topics such as Wildlife Disease Ecology, Wildlife Health, as well as contribute to lower level courses such as Wildlife Ecology as necessary. Demonstrated ability to (1) communicate with various diverse audiences (e.g., stakeholders, policymakers, and academics), (2) publish research in appropriate outlets, (3) develop and sustain external funding, and (3) advise both undergraduate and graduate-level students. NMSU and the Department of FWCE are diverse and multicultural and the ability to enjoy and thrive in the department’s team-oriented environment will be necessary.

Qualifications:

Success in this position requires excellence and expertise that strengthens the university’s capacity to engage students, community members, and affiliated scientists on issues related to wildlife management and conservation. It is envisioned that the faculty member will establish a nationally recognized research program underscored by the use of ecological and epidemiologic tools to better understand and address issues related to wildlife diseases. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to collaborate with faculty from the sponsoring department. Although no formal Extension duties are outlined in the position, outreach and service to stakeholders are an essential aspect of this position. Excellence in teaching is required with an anticipated teaching load of 2-3 courses annually. Advising of both undergraduate and graduate students is expected. Service to the profession and on university, college, and departmental committees is also expected.

FWCE is part of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, and is home to 11 faculty, 40 graduate students and 150 undergraduate students.
