This position is part of the Community Stewardship team providing education, outreach, and stewardship programs at PP&R Urban Forestry. We are currently re-imagining historic education and volunteer efforts and adapting them to engage underserved audiences, including BIPOC communities, immigrants, and refugees. This position will play a key role in evaluating past programming efforts, developing new ideas, and implementing new ways to promote environmental justice and tree equity.  

The position also serves as the sponsor for the Portland Parks & Recreation Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) Tree Crew. The YCC program is a summer-long job skills training program for youth, many identifying as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and/or those living with low incomes. As sponsor, this position collaborates with YCC administrative staff and adult crew leaders to manage the Tree Crew as they conduct tree maintenance and tree inventory activities.  

Qualifications:
  1. Ability to conduct and/or develop inclusive community education, outreach, and volunteer management for youth and diverse communities and individuals, including residents identifying as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and those living with low incomes. 

  1. Knowledge of adolescent behavior, and leading, mentoring, coaching, and working with teenagers from many different backgrounds and life experiences. 

  1. Knowledge of urban tree planting and care. 

  1. Ability to communicate with diverse external and internal audiences, through writing, public speaking, and engagement. 

Applicants must also possess: 

  • A valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire. 

  • The ability to perform both office work and outdoor work in all weather conditions; the ability to sit, stand, walk over uneven terrain; ability to stoop or bend; the ability to lift up to 25 lbs. 

  • CPR and First Aid certification and/or willingness and ability to acquire certification within 6 months of hire. 

  • Ability to pass a background check to be able to work with youth. 

Salary:
$35.22 - $44.97 Hourly
