Intern will work primarily in the field on ecological monitoring projects including: ● Long-term forest monitoring ● Federally endangered rock gnome lichen inventory ● Rare plant monitoring & restoration ● Tabular, spatial, and hard copy data management ● Herbarium curation ● Cross-training & professional development opportunities Qualifications: Applicant should be self-motivated, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to efficiently learn new material and skills. Education and/or experience in ecology, botany, forestry, or resource management preferred. Experience with working in stream habitats and/or rock-climbing a plus but not required. Must be able to hike 5-15 miles/day on- and off-trail in mountainous terrain and inclement weather while carrying a heavy pack. Some overnight backpacking and off-trail navigation will be required. Intern will be part of a team that prioritizes safety, respect, and effective communication at all times. Miscellaneous: With over 100 native tree species, 1,500 flowering plant species, and 100 unique plant communities, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most diverse national park in the country. Our Inventory & Monitoring Program studies the status and trends of vegetation communities, rare and sensitive plant species, and other natural resources throughout the park.
