Job Description:

Summer interns (3) are hired to work and live on Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is accessible only by boat and boat transportation is provided. The majority of the responsibilities involve monitoring loggerhead sea turtle nests. Duties include locating sea turtle nests; installing predator controls; inventorying nests; collecting, recording, and entering data into seaturtle.org. Interns may participate in education/outreach, invasive species monitoring and control, shorebird surveys, and facilities and trail maintenance.

 

 

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old;

• Ability to follow data collection and management protocols with great attention to

detail;

• Able to conduct strenuous work outdoors in adverse summer conditions on the

coast of Georgia. Conditions include but are not limited to extreme heat, long

periods in the sun, and exposure to biting insects.

• Team player but able to work independently;

• Able to work with the public and other refuge personnel in a professional manner;

• Safely operate Kawasaki UTVs;

• Valid driver’s license required

Work Schedule:

Start Date: early May (or sooner for those not in school)

End Date: mid-August or later pending availability

Work Schedule: 10 days on the island working with 4 days off island.

Free quality housing on Blackbeard Island NWR. Includes AC, washer/dryer, full kitchen. Off-island housing provided at Harris Neck NWR.
