Job Description:

The Guam Coral Reef Initiative (GCRI) is seeking applicants for a Watershed Management Coordinator. The Watershed Management Coordinator will perform the following duties: 

Coordinate with various stakeholder groups to implement watershed activities listed in the watershed management plans, which may include (but is not limited to) field surveys, mapping projects, water quality monitoring, tree plantings, etc. 

Manage a contract to develop a new watershed management plan for the Piti-Asan watershed

Design, seek funding, and execute projects to implement watershed management activities listed in watershed plans 

Prepare and submit the nomination of the Piti-Asan watershed as a priority watershed to the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Watershed Partnership Initiative 

Organize and conduct meetings with village residents in Piti and Asan to educate residents on current conservation efforts within their watersheds

Develop watershed-related educational materials and conduct environmental tours for community groups to promote responsible stewardship of Guam’s ecosystems 

Coordinate trainings with teachers for the Guardians of the Reef program, which teaches high school students to give presentations to elementary school students about the importance of coral reef and watershed conservation 

Represent GCRI/DOAG in working groups and partnerships related to watersheds 

Provide technical support to natural resource agencies and partners, and provide comments on related management plans and projects

Assist with grant management activities (e.g., procurement, reporting) 

Participate in various agency outreach events, participation includes logistical setup and providing educational, interactive activities for community members 

Other duties as assigned This is a 12-month full-time position with an anticipated start date on or before May 01, 2024, but this date is flexible. This position is expected to be 50% office/telework and 50% fieldwork. The Watershed Management Coordinator will be employed at the Guam Department of Agriculture (DOAG) as a Biologist III (Grade N, Step 1). The position will be hired through normal Government of Guam hiring practices as a limited term appointment under the Government of Guam job classification as a Biologist III. This position is federally funded through the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program. Benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, retirement, paid leave (annual, sick, and holidays), and training opportunities. Relocation expenses are not provided.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine or environmental science, ecological conservation, or a related field; OR a Bachelor’s degree in education, policy, communications, or a related field with demonstrable experience and/or training in ecological management 

Three years of experience in ecology, conservation, research, or a related field  Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 

Experience in project management and outreach/education 

Demonstrated proficiency in professional writing and speaking 

Excellent interpersonal skills, public speaking skills, and conflict management skills 

Able and willing to hike in a humid tropical climate multiple times per week 

Able to safely lift and carry at least 35 pounds 

Valid driver’s license

Able to pass a medical examination, drug screening, and police/court clearance 

Must be a United States citizen or otherwise legally permitted to work in the U.S. 

Must be located in Guam or willing to relocate to Guam upon hiring Other Desired Qualifications 

Two years of experience in terrestrial or marine ecological management 

Experience with in situ plant identification 

Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro)

Experience in water quality monitoring, mapping, and/or photogrammetry 

Licensed Part 107 certified drone pilot 

First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications

The Guam Coral Reef Initiative (GCRI) is a program of the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources. GCRI’s goal is to provide a comprehensive program for the conservation and management of Guam’s coral reef ecosystems. GCRI’s work includes environmental restoration projects, management planning, ecological monitoring, disaster response, and education and outreach.

Salary:
$54,918/year + benefits
