Job Description:

This Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biologist is responsible for supervising wildlife and forest management within White Rock and Lee Creek Wildlife Management Areas, in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Must be able to work well in partnership with USFS staff and assist other AGFC regional staff on other wildlife management areas across Northwest Arkansas. Work activities will include management and monitoring of species such as bear, deer, turkey, quail, and feral hogs, among others including non-game species. Habitat management practices such as the application of prescribed fire will also require periodic coordination and participation. Participates in developing wildlife management area recommendations and provides oversight of contracts that are implemented to either manage or improve wildlife species and habitat conditions, as well as to promote public use and enjoyment of Arkansas' natural resources. Frequently interacts with the public to answer questions or concerns and to inform them of new or proposed rules and regulations. Coordination or assistance with events such as public meetings, educational workshops, field tours, or speaking to public groups may be required. Assists in addressing nuisance animals and wildlife depredation complaints from property owners and provides appropriate technical assistance in assigned nuisance animal counties. Performs routine administrative duties required to comply with program, division, and agency standards. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The following are preferred qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, forest resources, biology, zoology, botany, or a related field.

Knowledge of the principles of wildlife management, biology, ecology, and related environmental sciences.

Knowledge of plant and wildlife species native to Arkansas and their habitat requirements.

Knowledge of game and fish management programs including propagation, cultivation, and harvesting techniques.

Knowledge of wildlife and forest habitat management practices such as the application of prescribed fire, herbicides, and mechanical treatments, and the ability to perform each.

Formal training in prescribed fire preferred and the ability to complete the fire program's annual physical fitness test.

Knowledge of game and fish laboratory and field survey equipment, techniques, and procedures.

Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates.

Ability to make public presentations and conduct workshops, field tours, or public meetings when necessary.

Ability to plan work unit objectives and operational activities and coordinate these with appropriate partners or other agency staff.

Ability to plan and organize assigned tasks independently.

Ability to follow directives in agency-issued field requests and to collect data for scientific game and fish surveys and studies, analyze and evaluate collected data, and prepare written reports of findings.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Strong computer skills, to include the ability to prepare, modify, and interpret documents, forms, spreadsheets, maps, etc. with the use of Microsoft Office programs and others.

Skilled in the safe and effective operation of small power equipment and machinery.

Skilled in operating vehicles with

 trailers and common farm equipment, including tractors.

 

Miscellaneous:

Frequent in-state travel and field work with occasional exposure to inclement weather, rugged terrain, and dangerous animals is required.

 

This position's primary area of responsibility is White Rock WMA in Northwest Arkansas. Dependent upon the chosen applicant, the office location will either be housed at the USFS office in Ozark, AR or at the McIlroy Madison County WMA work center.

 

Successful candidates possessing Certified Wildlife Biologist status with The Wildlife Society are eligible for a 6% salary increase. Additional pay incentives exist for those qualified to participate on prescribed burns.

Salary:
$40,535 annually
