Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Working under the supervision of a Wildlife Biologist 3 that leads our coastal bird conservation efforts, the Wildlife Biologist 1 will assist with monitoring, research, habitat management, outreach and education for priority seabirds, shorebirds, wading birds, marsh birds, raptors, and songbirds. Much of this work will take place in challenging conditions (heat, cold, mud, biting insects) and in remote locations that are only accessible by boat. The ability to work safely and independently in marine environments is crucial. The Wildlife Biologist 1 will assist with hiring and training of seasonal staff, as well as vehicle, boat, and equipment maintenance. Ability to work with state, federal, and NGO partners to achieve conservation goals is critical.

Minimum Qualifications:

NRP060 - Wildlife Biologist 1 
Bachelors degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Familiarity with federally listed and SWAP priority birds found on Georgia's coast and coastal plain (wading birds, colonial nesting seabirds, beach nesting and migratory shorebirds, marsh birds, raptors).
  • Experience with techniques for bird trapping, extraction, banding and tracking birds (ie nanotags, conventional radio tags, satellite tags).
  • Experience with a variety of bird survey techniques, including point counts, playback surveys, area counts, and band resighting.
  • Experience with grant writing, datat collection, entry analysis, and report writing. Experience with data entry using GIS applications such as Field Maps  and Survey 123.
  • Experience operating boats in tidal ecosystems and with trailering boats.
  • Status as a current or former employee of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
