JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, this position will work closely with the State Wildlife Health and State Deer Biologists with statewide wildlife disease surveillance, monitoring, and response activities, with primary emphasis on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in white-tailed deer. The position primarily assists with data management, maintaining surveillance records and databases, and also has some opportunity for biological sample collection and supporting field investigations associated with CWD. This position will also assist with monitoring and response activities related to other wildlife diseases and emerging pathogens. The position works collaboratively with agency staff, diagnostic laboratories, and partner organizations to support wildlife health investigations and disease monitoring programs. Duties include both field and office work and require travel and work during hunting seasons and wildlife disease response events. This is a three-year term position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience with wildlife disease surveillance or wildlife health monitoring programs
  • Experience collecting biological samples from wildlife (e.g., lymph nodes, blood, swabs, tissue)
  • Experience managing databases to organize, query, and analyze data
  • Experience using GIS applications (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS) and statistical software
  • Experience working with white tailed deer and/or other cervids
  • Experience with wildlife necropsy procedures and/or as a veterinary technician caring for live animals
  • Experience working with state or federal wildlife agencies, diagnostic laboratories, or conservation partners
  • DNR/WRD employment experience
