Job Description: 

The Wildlife Biologist 2 will coordinate work related to the conservation of bat and other small mammal species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) identified in Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan.  

Primary duties include collecting biological data, conducting research, developing and implementing scientific sampling protocols, managing NABat projects and updating rare species records in the Biotics database. The Wildlife Biologist 2 will also plan and coordinate surveys and research related to bats and other small mammals throughout Georgia, identify and track T&E species, and supervise technicians, seasonal workers, volunteers, and other personnel. 

This position will also supervise a technician that supports mammal and bird tracking projects using the MOTUS system and is responsible for installing and maintaining MOTUS towers and equipment statewide. The Wildlife Biologist 2 will provide technical support and outreach to individuals, conservation partners, and assist other DNR staff as needed. Current rabies vaccinations are required for work with mammals. 

This position is housed in the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Wildlife Resources Division and will require overnight travel to project areas in remote regions of the state. The Wildlife Biologist 2 will write management plans and reports, keep accurate records, comply with administrative policies, and participate in other related activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master's degree in biology or a related field from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field from an accredited college or university AND one (1) year of related experience. OR one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Wildlife Biologist 1, (NRP060) or position equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree in biology or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Experience with handling, identification, & tracking (including the MOTUS Wildlife Tracking System) as well as planning and conducting surveys for SGCN bat and other small mammal species, including federally protected species, in the southeastern US.
  3. Experience and familiarity with rare species data management using GIS and NatureServe's methodology.
  4. Experience developing general training materials, manuals, and programs for volunteers and/or technicians.
  5. Experience with data entry and data analysis, writing technical reports & supervision of volunteers and technicians.
  6. Status as a current or former employee of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
