Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Under limited supervision, this position's duties include but are not limited to, coordinating statewide wildlife disease efforts, including surveillance, monitoring, and response, with particular focus on chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer. This includes conducting those activities relating to the design, implementation, analyses, interpretation, and dissemination of disease surveillance and research data as well as examining wildlife disease implications relative to population dynamics and coordinating agency response to wildlife disease outbreaks.  The position will serve as a contact for wildlife disease issues and represents the agency while participating in working groups and committees at state, regional, and national levels.  Activities require coordination with other sections, divisions within the Department, other federal and state agencies, and private organizations and groups. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master's degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university AND One year of related experience.

OR

Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of related 

OR 

One year of experience required at the lower-level Wildlife Biologist 2, (NRP061) or position equivalent.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1.  Detailed knowledge and experience relative to wildlife disease surveillance and response, conducting wildlife disease investigations, and collection of diagnostic samples and related data management.

2.  Ability to identify, capture and handle a wide range of wildlife species, conduct field necropsies, collect and process biological samples from live and dead wildlife, and prepare, preserve and store specimens.

3. Graduate degree in veterinary medicine, zoology, wildlife biology or closely related field.

4. Experience managing databases to organize, query, and analyze data.
