Job Description:

The Wildlife Biologist 3 will coordinate the Department’s marine mammal conservation program, focused on North Atlantic right whales, Florida manatees and bottlenose dolphins. The biologist will 1) coordinate marine mammal research and monitoring projects (plan projects; collect, manage and analyze data; write technical reports), 2) coordinate marine mammal management and policy efforts (conduct environmental reviews, develop mitigation plans, draft agency correspondence, represent the Department on management teams), 3) lead marine mammal stranding and disentanglement response, and 4) administer the marine mammal program (manage grants, permits and contracts; supervise staff and volunteers).  The position requires a diverse set of skills and abilities, including 1) a strong academic and background, 2) excellent verbal and written communication skills, 3) excellent quantitative and technical skills, 4) ability to operate watercraft, small drones and other field equipment in sometimes adverse conditions, 5) ability to conduct diagnostic necropsies, 6) ability to lead and to work as part of a team, and 7) comfort working with large wildlife species in stressful and potentially hazardous situations, including disentangling whales and euthanizing stranded dolphins.  The biologist must carry a state‐issued mobile phone and participate in an on‐call rotation for marine animal strandings and other wildlife emergencies on weekends, holiday and afterhours.   

Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

• A MS or PhD in wildlife management, marine biology, zoology or related field.

• Two years of professional experience conducting wildlife conservation, research or management.

• Experience planning and implementing wildlife field research and/or monitoring projects.   

• Experience conducting marine mammal stranding, disentanglement and/or other live marine animal responses.

• Proficiency with database management, GIS and/or statistical software.

• Experience writing and administering federal grants and contracts, managing budgets, writing reports, supervising staff and other administrative duties.

• Experience operating watercraft independently in marine or coastal habitats.

• Experience with marine mammal, coastal management and/or T&E species management or policy.

• Experience coordinating complex projects involving multiple agencies, organizations or stakeholders.

• Ability to swim, complete a NOAA‐approved underwater aircraft egress training course, lift and carry at least 50 pounds, and see in color with corrected or uncorrected 20/20 vision.

Salary:
Entry Salary: $52,280/year
