Deadline: Sun, 09/22/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: NC Wildlife Resources Commission Job Field: Wildlife Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: North Carolina Location Detail: Williamston, NC Job Description: Lands and Water Access - Temporary - 11-month - Primary work responsibility involves assisting with habitat development on game lands, general maintenance of Public Boating Access Areas, Aids to Navigation and Fishing Areas, and assistance to agency programs conducting various wildlife and fishery surveys as designated by the Wildlife Resources Commission. A considerable amount of work will consist of operating farm tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment and trucks. Applicant must be willing to operate this type of equipment. This employee participates in work to enhance wildlife populations through cultural practices to restore or improve native habitat. A considerable amount of time will be involved with prescribed burning, managing wildlife openings, creating early successional habitat, restoring altered ecosystems and waterfowl habitat management. Infrastructural duties will include but are not limited to maintenance of roads, dikes, trails, game land boundary, docks, piers, navigation aids and parking areas. Duties also include participation in the development of work plans, maintenance of records, assisting with wildlife surveys, and general maintenance of equipment and facilities while under the direction of the Wildlife Technician Supervisor. Qualifications: Minimum requirements include a working knowledge of the practical techniques and procedures involved in wildlife management, working knowledge of wildlife habitats and species requirements, ability to operate and maintain equipment and vehicles used in wildlife management, ability to plan collection efforts and accurately collect field data, ability to accurately analyze field data, ability to prepare written reports, and the ability to communicate effectively. Management prefers excellent knowledge of the principles and techniques of wildlife management; excellent knowledge of land and forest management and agricultural practices; excellent wildlife and plant ID skills; the ability to conduct wildlife surveys and collect scientific data; good communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public; the ability to utilize personal computers with MS Office, internet explorer, e-mail, and other software to complete a variety of job assignments; operation of GPS units and associated GIS software; the ability to operate a wide variety of equipment to include agricultural machinery, large commercial highway vehicles w/trailers, heavy equipment, ATVs, fire pumper units, weather instruments, watercraft, chainsaws, welder, 2-way radios, power hand tools and shop tools, as well as traditional hand and mechanical tools; ability to capture and handle wildlife including the use of explosives and rocket nets.
