Job Description:

The Jones Center at Ichauway invites applications for the temporary position of Wildlife Ecology Seasonal Research Technician. We will hire 2 employees to assist with all aspects of ongoing wildlife research which will primarily focus on small mammal ecology, predators and predator-prey interactions, and the effects of land management practices on wildlife communities. Positions will start between mid-March and May and will end in late August. There is potential for these positions to be extended into the fall and winter. Start and end dates are somewhat flexible. On-site housing is provided on an as-available basis (no pets).

 

The 28,000-acre research center is located approximately 30 miles south of Albany, Georgia. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs seek to understand, demonstrate, and promote excellence in natural resource management and conservation. The site includes 16,000 acres of longleaf pine forests, more than 1,000 acres of wetlands, and 26 miles of stream and river ecosystems. Duties:

- Live trapping rats and mice

- Trail camera surveys

- Track surveys

- Maintaining electric fences

- Predator trapping

- Avian surveys using autonomous recorders

- Data entry (especially processing trail camera images)

- Other duties as needed

- Field work will occur in hot, humid, and buggy conditions and at times will be physically strenuous.

- Early morning, evening, and weekend work may occasionally be required.

 

Qualifications:

- Applicants should have a background in wildlife biology, ecology, or related field.

- An associate’s or bachelor’s degree is preferred, as is prior field experience.

- Experience handling and identifying southeastern small mammals and identifying southeastern birds by call are preferred but not required.

- Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.

- Applicants must be able to work individually and as a part of a team, follow instructions, neatly and accurately record data, and read small print on ear tags.

- Applicants must be able to carry loads up to 50 lbs and climb over fences.

- Applicants must be in good physical condition and must be able to work very hot, humid, and buggy conditions. The position is heavily field based with much time spent outdoors collecting field data. Venomous snakes and poison ivy are common throughout our research areas.

- Experience driving trucks on unimproved roads is preferred.

- Experience using MS Office programs such as Excel is preferred.

 

Salary:
$12/hour with on-site housing provided, or $14/hour if no housing is provided. No benefits package is available.
