Job Description:

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries is seeking experienced, career focused applicants to fill a Wildlife Health Coordinator (Biologist III – Wildlife Option) position. This is an administrative and professional tract position primarily responsible for managing programs related to wildlife disease ecology, monitoring, and management. The incumbent serves as the Division’s Wildlife Health Coordinator who’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, identifying statewide disease issues related to focal wildlife species; coordinating and implementing species specific disease surveillance; assisting with data collection on various program projects; preparing documents and reports for state and federal funding compliance; assisting with budget outlays and prioritizing program expenditures; preparing documents and reports for disease regulation recommendations; providing technical assistance on wildlife disease to government agencies, and public and private entities; collaborating with other resource professionals, state agencies, and universities on cooperative wildlife disease research and management efforts; preparing monthly and annual reports detailing work accomplishments associated with disease surveillance, management, research, and technical assistance; developing written materials covering various wildlife disease topics to be shared through technical and popular media, and other outlets; providing ongoing support to senior staff on development and evaluation of wildlife disease response plans, policies, and regulations; and other duties as assigned. This position, while largely autonomous in daily duties, receives oversight and programmatic guidance from the Wildlife Section Assistant Chief for Research and Species Management and serves as part of the Technical Assistance Program Team. Field work with exposure to inclement weather and travel, including occasional overnight stays, is required.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge of wildlife biology and ecology for game and nongame species.

• Knowledge of common and emergent wildlife diseases.

• Knowledge of population dynamics and habitat management principles and practices.

• Experience in and knowledge of wildlife disease identification and sampling techniques.

• Knowledge of scientific methods, survey designs, statistical analysis, and data synthesis.

• Ability to develop risk assessments for certain focal wildlife diseases.

• Ability to plan, implement, administer, and coordinate wildlife disease and statewide surveillance programs.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written. • Ability to prepare written reports, articles, and conduct oral presentations.
