Job Description:

The University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (http://warnell.uga.edu/) is offering a full-time seasonal position conducting biodiversity inventories of streamside management zones (SMZs) in working forests. The position begins in May 2023 and lasts until August 2023, with exact beginning and end dates negotiable. The employee will assist with research examining vertebrate and invertebrate communities within SMZs with the overall goal of understanding how SMZs contribute to biodiversity. Activities will include but are not limited to active (e.g., live-trapping) and passive (e.g., acoustic detectors and camera traps) surveys for terrestrial mammals, bats, and birds, cover object and time-constrained searches for herpetofauna, passive sampling for insect pollinators, and vegetation sampling. The project will be based out of Athens, GA, with field work taking place at various locations in east-central Georgia. Lodging will be covered while deployed in the field, and travel to study sites will be provided by a state vehicle.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants must have college-level coursework in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field. Applicants should be comfortable performing data entry and other computer-based work. A valid class C driver’s license is required.

Preferred experience includes conducting field work independently in remote areas, identifying southeastern vertebrates and trees, using remote cameras and autonomous recording units (ARUs), and small mammal trapping. Ability to hike long distances, use a handheld GPS, and operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle are also preferred.

 

Miscellaneous:

Applicants should be in good physical condition and able to work in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, biting insects, etc. are possible.

$12.50 per hour
