(GALT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting land for present and future generations. Our land protection mission also includes the restoration and management of important high priority habitat and species. In furtherance of this mission, GALT partners with Fort Stewart Georgia to engage in habitat management and restoration on-post at Fort Stewart. This involves working with Fort Stewart’s Fish & Wildlife Branch to manage, monitor, and restore its longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem, which serves as habitat for numerous high priority species, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW), Eastern Indigo Snake, and Gopher Tortoise. A Wildlife Technician’s duties may include, but are not limited to, the following activities: planting wiregrass seed for restoration efforts; pond dam maintenance; RCW banding, monitoring, and translocations; installing/replacing RCW artificial cavities; surveying for Eastern Indigo Snake; controlling invasive species using herbicides; managing Northern Bobwhite habitat; preparing, maintaining, and monitoring Wood Duck boxes; preparing for the safety of RCW trees before application of prescribed fire; planting food plots; liming and fertilizing fish ponds; controlling aquatic weeds; maintaining river landings; conducting surveys for Gopher Tortoise; improving Gopher Tortoise habitat; collecting biological data at White-tailed Deer check stations; harvesting Wiregrass seed; surveying for Frosted Flatwoods Salamanders; creating associated reports and documentation of work performed; and other tasks as assigned. All work performed will be consistent with the GALT’s Administrative Standard Operating Procedure. The Wildlife Technician reports to Fort Stewart Fish & Wildlife Branch’s Operations Chief. Qualifications: • The ability to operate as a team member, including being responsive to remote supervision. • Self-motivated and hard-working. • Outstanding judgment and an ability to collaborate with a wide range of wildlife and military professionals. • The ability to get along with others while getting the job completed (strong interpersonal skills). • Excellent oral and written communication and time management skills. • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree (to include a current student nearing graduation) in Wildlife Management or a closely related field. • Working knowledge of wildlife regulations and customer service standards. • The position requires vision in both eyes to allow depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors; must be able to climb a ladder up to 50 feet above the ground., pick up 50-pound bags of seed/fertilizer, and be able to work in all types of weather and working conditions typical and customary for field work as a wildlife technician, including heat, allergens, biting insects, and venomous snakes. • Will need to obtain a Georgia Pesticide Applicator license and USFWS certifications for banding red-cockaded woodpeckers and installing artificial inserts (to be acquired within 12 months of starting the position). • Knowledgeable in all aspects of the Longleaf/Wiregrass ecosystem. • Maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. • Proficient with MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
