Job Description:

The Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking a highly motivated Wood Utilization & Marketing Specialist to join a talented team of professionals in the Forest Analytics Department. This individual will be part of an integrated team that works to deliver tools and information to support the agency mission of ensuring the state's trees, forests and related natural resources are protected and sustained for the benefit of all Texans.

 

Responsibilities:

 

-Establish and maintain working relations with wood-using industries and consumers to provide technical assistance on specific problems.

 

-Coordinate and administer annual timber harvest and production survey.

 

-Plan and conduct investigative projects, marketing surveys, and educational programs.

 

-Conduct training programs in wood utilization for Texas A&M Forest Service staff and external partners.

 

-Coordinate wood utilization and marketing component of the Texas A&M Forest Service economic development program.

 

-Prepare problem analyses and work plans.

 

-Answer requests for information and assistance.

 

-Continually review literature to stay current on wood utilization.

-Conduct need assessments and provide training and technical assistance to mill operators to product value-added products and/or to improve efficiency.

 

-Produce articles for newsletters, newspapers and maintain websites on Forest products manufacturing, wood utilization and marketing.

 

-Provide expert advice on wood product issues relating to forest product manufacturing.

 

-Train agency and other foresters on marketing Texas forest products.

-Support rapid timber damage assessment efforts following natural disasters.

-Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required Education: Undergraduate degree in Forestry

 

Preferred Education: Advanced degree in Foresty, Wood Technology, Wood Products, Wood Science or similar.

 

Required Experience: Three (3) years

 

Preferred Experience: Professional experience in wood utilization and/or forest products marketing.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Required Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of economic principles, theories and practices, micro-and macro-economic analysis, econometrics with an emphasis on forestry issues and management. Proficiency in MS Office and statistical software (e.gl, SAS, R, SPSS).

 

Knowledge of economic research methodologies and modeling techniques and applications. GIS and spatial analysis.

 

Required Ability: Proficiency in analyzing FIA data and other forest resource data.

 

Preferred Skills: Skills in the use of software systems for modeling timber supply and economic impact (e.g., SRTS, IMPLAN) are highly desirable.

 

-The most competitive applicants will also demonstrate: (1) ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, (2) strong applied research and technical ability, (3) experience with delivering economic and policy information using a variety of methods including online tools, (4) ability to work independently and as a team member, and (5) multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

 

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

Required: Valid Texas Drivers license.

 

Preferred: SAF Certification.

Salary:
56,000.00
Benefits:

-Primarily office-based, but some field work will be expected.

 

-Some work may occur after hours and require out of town travel.
